La Verne sophomore first baseman Alexis Schiff catches a ball fielded by senior shortstop Rebecca Ireland early in the first game of a doubleheader against Whittier Friday at Campus West. Schiff went on to homer in the bottom of the sixth, adding the last three runs to seal the win for La Verne, 8-1. In game two, Schiff singled to right field for an RBI and the only run of the game. Junior center fielder Raeleen Tellez made the catch of the season, after robbing Whittier freshman shortstop Marialena Ahern of a potential grand slam to center field. The incredible catch helped ice La Verne’s win, 1-0. Even with the sweep, the Poets remain in first place of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and La Verne is in third. The Leopards will face the Bulldogs in a doubleheader Friday at Redlands followed by their last home game of the regular season against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Saturday. / photo by Daniel Torres
The softball team made its first NCAA Championship appearance in seven years on Saturday. The team traveled to Tyler, Texas for the Regional tournament hosted by Texas-Tyler at Suddenlink Field.
Alexis Schiff has a full list of accomplishments as a student and softball player at the University of La Verne and has now added the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Year as an accolade during her senior year.
The Leopards went into the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament on a high after their last conference win, making them SCIAC champions for the second year in a row. The team only lost one game throughout the weekend, ending the tournament 4-1.
