Veterans Day should be observed

Veterans Day is a time to honor those who have served our country. It is a federal holiday where we are able to show appreciation for those who have sacrificed so much to keep us safe and at peace.

Yet students and faculty at the University of La Verne were once again unable to have the day off to do so.

While many public schools and businesses observed the holiday by closing Wednesday, the University did not.

However, the University still has events to celebrate the day. The Associated Students of the University of La Verne, Campus Activities Board and Student Veterans of America La Verne held a walk and ceremony at Veterans Hall in La Verne.

The University has a historical affiliation with the La Verne Church of the Brethren and according to the church’s heritage of peace, it “has grown in its understanding of the complexity of violence beyond warfare to include economic, spiritual, emotional and physical violence.” The church may object violence, but it does not have the same opinion about veterans.

La Verne was the only California university on the U.S. News and World Report’s 2015 Best Colleges for Veterans list and was again ranked nationally in 2016, a fact the school proudly displays on its website and on billboards across Southern California.

It is great that the University holds commemorative events, has added programs for student veterans and boasts about being the best school for veterans, but it still fails to honor the federal holiday day in a respectful and appreciative manner. Veterans should be recognized for their service, but by not celebrating the holiday dedicated to them, the University does not deserve the title of “the best college for veterans.”
