After being accused of making sexual advances towards underaged actor Anthony Rapp, Kevin Spacey issued an insensitive statement excusing his advances because he was a gay drunk. Spacey turned it into a coming out story and tried to spin the narrative that what he did was not wrong because he was gay and the only reason he did it was because he was drunk.
Spacey released his statement in a Oct. 29 tweet: “I honestly do not remember the encounter. It would have been over 30 years ago.”
He then tried to excuse his behavior by blaming alcohol. His apology is not sincere at all because he is trying to justify a behavior that has no justification.
“But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years,” Spacey said.
The last paragraph of his statement is even worse because it perpetuates stereotypes that the LGBTQ community is filled with pedophiles or that the community normalizes pedophilia.
Other victims have begun to come forward, like the son of actor Richard Dreyfuss, Harry Dreyfuss, who recently alleged in an article he penned for BuzzFeed that Kevin Spacey groped him. Filmmaker Tony Montana also told RadarOnline that Kevin Spacey grabbed his crotch in a pub in 2003. A former production assistant told CNN that Kevin Spacey sexually assaulted him during “House of Cards” infancy.
Hopefully, people are not foolish enough to buy into Spacey’s excuses. The victims that have come forward show that this is not a one-time thing and it is more of a pattern of sexual harassment and assault. While news is only just unfolding, more victims will and should come forward, and he must pay for what he did.
Netflix has already announced that they will postpone the sixth and final season of “House of Cards” until further notice, but Kevin Spacey will take no part in the production of the final season. This is just the start; other production companies should blacklist and refuse to work with him.
