The current Republican administration in this nation is proposing three things which could be highly problematic for all students attending (or planning to attend) college: (1) Elimination of Pell Grants, which are a vital source of funding for some students; (2) Raising the interest rates on your student loans from 3.4 percent to 10.1 percent; and (3) Eliminating the tax write-off for interest on student loan payments. They are also proposing huge cuts to the Department of Veterans Affairs budget, which would undoubtedly place more burdens on veterans who are attending college. If passed, these policies would create added burdens on students which could possibly be insurmountable; this is a call to action for all students and faculty at the University of La Verne. Write, call, or e-mail your elected representatives and express your objection to these hurtful policies, which are being done mainly to ensure that those in the upper 1 percent financially receive huge tax breaks.
As Dr. King said: “There comes a time when silence is betrayal.” We must all be active in preventing these destructive bills from passing.
