Battle of the acapella welcomes Greek newbies

Over 100 students came together to meet the newly initiated members of the La Verne Greek community at Greek Perfect, Wednesday night in Morgan Auditorium.

All of the organizations competed against each other through acapella performances.

Greek Perfect was hosted by members of the College Panhellenic Association and the Interfraternity Council. To prevent bias and favoritism in the competition, three non-Greek students were chosen for the panel of judges.

Iota Delta triumphed in the competition, earning a supportive uproar from the crowd.

Leading up to the competition, a food drive for the Leo Food Pantry took place and for every 10 items an organization donated, an extra point was given to their performance total.

Before the acapella battle began, new member classes from each organization introduced themselves by name and a fact about the history of their organization.

The groups performed pop songs with altered lyrics that described their organizations, equipped with choreography, and matching outfits.

“As a new member, participating in Greek Perfect was important to me because showing a face and positively representing our new member class is an important step for me,” freshman business administration major and member of Iota Delta, Aina-Jade Inguito said.

Ana Saldivar, vice president of programming for CPA and a member of Phi Sigma Sigma, said she worked hard to put the competition together.

“The reason I wanted to put on this event or take on this position for CPA was because I wanted to give back to the Greek community and CPA gives me the opportunity to do that,” said Saldivar, who is also a senior sociology and Spanish major.

Saldivar said that she hoped the event was a fun and positive experience for the attendees.

“As for the people that are in the audience, I just wanted them to get a little glimpse at what it’s like to be a part of Greek life,” Saldivar said.

She said singing acapella onstage is a great chance for everyone to goof around and explained that Greek Perfect reflects the positivity that Greek life has on campus and was glad people were able to attend.

After an intense drum roll at the end of the night, members of Iota Delta jumped up and down as everyone in Morgan Auditorium cheered for their victory.

“I’m so happy Iota Delta won,” junior psychology major and newly initiated member of Iota Delta Katie Peterson said. “We worked really hard and winning made every late night worth it.”

Sarah Vander Zon, senior photography major and Alpha Omicron Pi member, said she hoped the competition would have a positive impact on the La Verne Greek community’s newest members.

“I think during their new member process they are more focused on getting to know their own organization, but now this is a chance to interact with other sororities and fraternities,” Vander Zon said. “The inter-fraternal bond at La Verne is so special and I think this is a great chance for them to get a feel for what the following years will bring.”
