If the closures of the Covina and Chino Hills Guppy House locations have left a popcorn chicken-sized hole in your heart, Golden Peach Café has arrived to fill it.

Since its grand opening in early August, Golden Peach has established itself as an elevated take on the boba cafe concept, with its emphasis on service and a menu geared more toward entrees than appetizers or desserts.

The menu options are decidedly Asian fusion, offering traditional Taiwanese favorites and adding some elements from various styles of cuisine.

All of the traditional milk tea and smoothie options are available, including thai tea ($3.50) and milk tea ($4).

I suggest stepping away from the basics and going with a more unique option like the blueberry black tea ($4.50) or the titular golden peach smoothie ($5).

Keep in mind none of the drinks come with boba, so if you really cannot imagine milk tea without the chewy tapioca balls they are an additional 75 cents.

The entrees are all served as a build-your-own-plate option, allowing diners to choose their protein and two sides.

There are chicken, pork, beef, shrimp and tofu options available.

The early favorite protein options are the classic popcorn chicken ($9) and the more adventurous braised pork belly ($8).

The popcorn chicken hits the right crispy/meaty balance, and the ginger and garlic bring the flavor.

The braised pork belly is a small portion big on flavor, tender and juicy rendered in pork goodness.

I have heard good things about the sous vide beef and butter shrimp so I will have to give those a try on my next visit.

Sides are fairly simple but offer a complement to the protein options; brown rice, plantains, fries, veggies and salad are all options.

That being said, it is still definitely a cafe; despite the list of entrees and sit-down service Golden Peach remains a quick casual spot for a tea and a snack between classes or on a lunch break.

Golden Peach is the place for a smoothie while you study or chat with a friend, but the television, rock music, bright lighting and stark decor make it less than ideal for a date night.

The service is friendly and helpful and the location is bright, open and clean.

It is great for a casual lunch and offers a good variety and value.

Golden Peach is located at 2855 Foothill Boulevard and is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Monday.
