The University of La Verne announced Monday that this year’s 10th Lavernapalooza spring concert headliner will be rap duo Rae Sremmurd. The big event is set for May 2.

Lavernapalooza, held at the Fox Theater in Pomona, has previously headlined artists such as J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Travis $cott, Lil Wayne and Ty Dolla $ign.

“It’s about to go big,” said Charles Lapuz, senior business major and Campus Advisory Board marketing chair.

After a week of hints on the Lavernapalooza Instagram page, many students had guessed artists such as Tyler the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, SOB x RBE and even Rae Sremmurd.

Students were finally able to find out as they gathered in the Campus Center Monday night and enjoyed snacks from Auntie Anne’s, provided by the Campus Advisory Board and ASULV.

CAB could not help but have a little fun in the reveal process and prank the crowd as it was April Fool’s Day, at first “Rick-Rolling” everyone in attendance with the song “Never Gonna Give You Up” to reveal that the artist would be Rick Astley.

CAB eventually dropped down the official banner with Rae Sremmurd, and the blasts of confetti cannons went off as their song “Black Beatles” played.

“I liked the reveal and how much time CAB and ASULV put into creating the hints and building up the excitement for the reveal,” said Janelle Pedroza, senior biology major. “Regardless, LVP is always so much fun and as a senior I’m just excited to go with my friends and have a great time.”

Sophomore kinesiology major and CAB spirit chair Serena Martinez said she liked how they were able to build up the excitement to this year’s artist reveal.

“I think the reveal was hyped a lot more than last year by not having a specific event tied to Lavernapalooza reveal,” Martinez said. “Instead, people were more focused on finding out who the artist was going to be rather than it also being Carniverne, too.”

“I don’t think La Verne could’ve chosen a better artist,” said Alyssa Martinez, freshman psychology major. “I’ve seen them perform before and I can’t wait to see them again at Lavernapalooza.”

Ticket distribution is free to traditional undergraduate students and will be held Monday, April 22 at 11 a.m. in Fasnacht Court. There will also be tickets available to the public for purchase.
