Scott Winterburn, who has served as Interim Athletic Director for the past two years will be the permanent AD, University officials announced this week.
Winterburn has served as the head baseball coach since 2000 and stepped into the interim position with the departure of former AD Julie Kline in 2017.
“Scott has brought experience, dedication, and a love for intercollegiate athletics to the University of La Verne,” President Devorah Lieberman said in a news release Tuesday. “As head baseball coach for 19 seasons, Scott has had a winning tradition at the University of La Verne. We are looking forward to his continued leadership.”
As baseball coach, Winterburn has led the Leopards to five Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles, including back-to-back wins in 2004 and 2005, as well as the team’s most recent win in 2018. His other coaching accolades include six NCAA playoff appearances, three SCIAC Athletes of the Year and six SCIAC Coach of the Year awards.
“The opportunity to lead this athletic department team is both humbling and also exhilarating for me,” Winterburn said in the news release. “So far the journey at the University of La Verne has been full of lessons I hold dear. We have great opportunities and challenges ahead of us, and I’m excited.”
As an associate professor of kinesiology, Winterburn has taught courses including motor development, curriculum, and health. He will continue as baseball coach in addition his athletic director duties.
“Leopard Athletics is in good hands with Coach Winterburn,” Provost Jonathan Reed said in the news release. “I am confident his experience, strong work ethic, and commitment to teamwork will help him with continuing the success.”
