The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on climate change warned in a recent report that it is certain that human influence has warmed the planet, as well as mentioning that these changes will cause major consequences for future generations.
This report has given urgency to the climate change issue throughout the world. The human impact on the planet is something the population needs to be aware of and limit the contamination they release into the atmosphere.
After the report, both Rep. Joe Neguse, D-Colo., and Rep. Mondaire Jones, D- N.Y., said that climate change has already caused permanent damage.
Climate change has been driven by greenhouse gasses released from burning fossil fuels. If the world continues on the path of raising the Earth’s temperature, it could turn out really bad for our future. Consequences include rising sea levels, extreme and dangerous weather events, and even the extinction of many vital animal and plant species.
One way this problem could be partially solved is if people come together and try to reduce their own carbon footprint. If millions of people around the world participate in these solutions, we could make a significant impact on reducing the earth’s temperature.
According to the National Park Service, there are some ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in your own home, including switching to renewable energy such as solar or wind energy. Planting trees can reduce the carbon in the air as the tree absorbs carbon dioxide. NPS also mentions you should turn your thermostat down 3 degrees in the winter and up 3 degrees in the summer, which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 1,050 pounds per year.
There are plenty of other simple changes – such as not using hot water on two loads of laundry a week – that will bring us a step closer to decreasing the earth’s temperature.
Being smart about your greenhouse gas emissions is something that has been rightfully preached about for years now, but it is time to finally listen.
By taking any small steps as possible, the human race can save the planet from any more catastrophic damage.
