The city of La Verne hosted its second annual Trunk-or-Treat, a free event where kids can safely trick-or-treat from many participating cars and trucks – with trunks full of candy and treats.
This year’s Trunk-or-Treat, on Oct. 15, at the La Verne Community Center began with the vehicles opening their trunks to give out candy to costumed kids.
Popular costumes were modeled after the movies “Halloween” and the “Avengers” among others. One vehicle stood out – a Volkswagen Beetle with a couple of skeletons in the driver and passenger seats and a trunk with a fake dead body stuffed inside.
This kind of creativity and spirit along with a variety of music, made the event fun and exciting for the kids.
“It is important to celebrate the city and bring each other together,” said Candace Bowcock, a principal planner for La Verne, who came out for Trunk-or-Treat.
Although the weather was a little chilly, food trucks selling warm Mexican treats and drinks, such as churros and champurrado helped keep trick-or-treaters warm.
Parents said they liked the non-traditional trick-or-treating event as it felt safer than the traditional going from door to door.
“It’s safer all around,” said Brenda Stewart, who came out for the early holiday celebration. “The kids love all the decorations, so I think Trunk-or-Treat is better.”
Children and adults also got to play games like Jenga and Connect Four.
“Trunk-or-Treat is so enjoyable because it’s giving back to the community,” said Anthony Porter, president of the La Verne-San Dimas Educational Foundation. “Bringing the community together (is what) makes events like this special.”
