Students sang their hearts out during Karaoke Night in the Quay Davis Board Room on Thursday from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. The small event was hosted by the Latino Student Forum club.
To celebrate the end of the semester, the Latino Student Forum put together an event where students can sing without judgment and have fun. Students also enjoyed pizza, drinks, Mexican candy and company.
Songs like “Stay” and “Rude Boy” by Rihanna, “Princess Diana” by Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj, “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor, “All I Ask” by Adele, “Supermodel” by SZA, and Spanish songs were just a few tracks that were sung by the students and club members.
“A few of us like to sing, so we wanted to host an event to sing our favorite artists,” Sergio Morones, junior computer science major and president of the Latino Student Forum, said.
As a proud Latino, Morones joined the club last year and has enjoyed being a part of the club, surrounded by his fellow members. Morones has had fun planning and participating in events all semester. One event was Reencuentro, which was created for students to play games together, like Loteria, get their caricature picture drawn and try delicious foods. The meaning in English of Reencuentro is reunion.
Morones has been waiting to plan a Karaoke Night for a year and was finally able to make it happen with the help of his fellow club members.
“We are looking forward to having more unity with students, more collaborative events and more recognition for Latinos and Latinas at the University of La Verne,” Morones said.
Elizabeth Hernandez, sophomore political science major and treasurer of the Latino Student Forum, was cheering and recording her friends singing. Hernandez joined the club at the beginning of the spring semester.
“It is special coming together because we have a shared experience of our cultures,” Hernandez said. “Most of our events are us being able to vibe and chill together, so (it is) a fun time tonight.”
Alexia Daniels, sophomore political science major, shared the microphone with her friend and sang five songs together.
“I (am) having a great time tonight,” Daniels said. “Everyone (a part of the club) is so nice and they like to have fun.”
The spotlight was on Daniel Delara, junior biology major and member of the Latino Student Forum, as his fellow club members kept cheering him on to sing.
Delara sang “Stay” by Rihanna with Morones and a few songs from “High School Musical” solo.
“It (has) been pretty fun singing up there today and I came to support my friends from the club,” Delara said. “I sang a total of four songs and I plan on singing a few more songs.”
Delara is a transfer student and joined the club for the first time this year and plans on being more involved with the club next semester.
“I am enjoying being a part of the club and next semester I am excited to see where we take it next semester,” Delara said. “I am hoping next semester we can do a carnival event because that would be pretty fun.”
