The winning streak continues for the La Verne men’s soccer team, after a 3-0 win against Linfield on Sept. 8 at Ortmayer Stadium.
Junior forward Adan Villarreal, the newly-named Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week, continued to impress when he scored the first goal in the game. Villarreal found the back of the net 17 minutes into the first half with freshman midfielder Alexander Bastidas getting the assist.
After La Verne’s goal, the Wildcats played tighter defense but were immoderate, as sophomore defender Evan Stafford received a yellow card. Villarreal took the shot for the penalty kick but missed, sending it far right of the goal.
Determined for redemption, La Verne junior midfielder Owen Osagiede sent a straight pass to Villarreal, who maintained possession and scored once again to earn a brace. The Leopards lead 2-0.
Head coach Trevor Persson substituted senior midfielder Damian Lira-Martinez for Bastidas. After a foul, Lira-Martinez still managed to get past the Linfield defense and scored to earn the Leopards their third goal of the night.
Even with several substitutions, the Wildcats still could not score. La Verne junior goalkeeper Hector Duenes-Pena would not let anything pass by him in goal. The Leopards went on to win the game, 3-0.
However, the Leopards’ winning streak came to an end Sunday against George Fox, 2-1.
The Leopards will have their first SCIAC game of the season at 7 p.m. Saturday in Thousand Oaks against California Lutheran.
