Ramadan is time for spiritual growth

As February comes to a close, the time for reflection and prayer nears closer for the Muslim community.

Ramadan, the holy month of fasting and service, commemorates the first revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad. The Five Pillars of Islam are put into major focus during this month; Shahadah, Salah, Zakat, Sawm and Hajj.

A major part of this month is fasting or Sawm. From dawn, or suhoor, to sunset, or iftar, drinking water or eating any food is prohibited. This practice exercises self-discipline, mindfulness, and closeness to God.

The Shahadah or the declaration of faith in Islam states: “I bear witness that there is no god but God, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God.” It is the most sacred statement in Islam and is recited during each of the five daily prayers.

Salah are the five daily prayers that Muslims practice during the day. They are before dawn, noon, late afternoon, sunset and nighttime. Praying towards Mecca and washing before every prayer is a sacred time for Muslims to seek guidance, forgiveness and blessings from God.

Zakat is another important pillar of Islam that is a key tradition during Ramadan. Zakat or helping the less fortunate keeps the Muslim community united and builds a support system for those in need.

The last and most significant pillar is Hajj or the pilgrimage to the Ka’bah in Mecca. At least once in their lifetime, Muslims are expected to make the pilgrimage if able. For five to six days the Hajj spiritually fulfills Muslims and unites them in a very sacred way.

Eid al-Fitr ends the month as a celebration for feasting and giving thanks. Family and friends gather to reflect on the month and enjoy meals together.

Throughout the year it can be easy to forget all the blessings that God has given to the world. Ramadan helps the Islamic community connect with one another while practicing empathy, humility, and discipline.
