Eric Linholm, professor of music and conductor at Pomona College, enthralled the audience leading a bold performance Sunday in Bridges Hall of Music on the Pomona College campus.
During the first half of the concert, the orchestra played music from “Hänsel and Gretel” by Engelbert Humperdinck and “Violin Concerto” by Alban Berg. Violin soloist and Pomona Sophomore Aria Wang played a beautiful section.
The orchestra featured strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion sections.
“When playing music, you gain a greater sense of appreciation for different kinds of styles,” Wang said. “You’re more able to pick up details and analyze music that way.”
“This was the popular music of its day,” Lindholm said. There (are) some people who work on music today that hope it will still be heard in 100 years,” Lindholm said. “The music is written to be played by a large number of people, there is always going to be ways for all of the people who are performing to interact with one another.”
For the second half of the show, Harvey Mudd College student and violin soloist Aimee Co displayed her gifts through her solo, “Violin Concerto in D” by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
