The athletic department hosted its annual Community Day on March 29 at Campus West. During the event, many students and their families were given a glimpse of the athletic department’s activities and got to watch the baseball and softball teams in action against conference opponents.
Many attention-catching and alluring treats were provided during the day. Waffles on a stick with a variety of sweet treat toppings like sprinkles and marshmallows were being given out to students. Other goodies were handed out like popcorn and pens, along with free t-shirts. Fruit cups with different fruits such as jicama, pineapple and melon were also being offered.
There were also booths for different charity-promoting organizations run by students, including fundraising for victims of the Los Angeles wildfires. Even though La Verne was not directly affected by these fires, many members of the community shared their sympathy and resources to support those affected.
“It’s shaped my view on a lot of things and made me realize that you truly have to work hard to make a difference,” Asrar Mohamed, junior business administration major and student volunteer at Kool Ash Koozies, said. “So,we’re coming out here once to twice a week, taking time from our own days and waking up early every morning; it makes you realize there’s a lot of things that matter more. There’s always a bigger picture to things.”
Although the event was targeted towards the students of the University, their families and other La Verne residents also attended.
Taking center stage were La Verne’s baseball and softball teams.
Riding on a 19-winning game streak, the baseball team not only illuminated the importance of community, but that of companionship and support.
“When I came here my freshman year, I didn’t really know too much,” Ethan Galindo, senior pitcher for the Leopards, said. “(Head coach Scott) Winterburn told me I was going to be coached and have a chance; that I was going to have a lot of detail. All three of those things are very important and I can see myself accomplishing all of them. Our team’s getting a lot more detailed, we always run hard 90s, through the bag, play small ball; all those details definitely contribute to a win.”
