A new Mexican restaurant, La Casa De La Abuela, opened recently in Pomona about two miles from La Verne, at 401 E. Foothill Blvd.

The breakfast menu includes “create your own” omelettes, classic eggs and bacon, chilaquiles and more. The breakfasts include beans and rice on the side. The prince range is $14 to $16.

The appetizer menu offers a fruit plate, chips and salsa, guacamole, grilled cheese with cactus and pork skin, with prices ranging from $5 to $12.

The dinner menu includes menudo and pozole, quesadillas, sopes, a variety of enchiladas, stews and more. The more classic known items include fajitas, carne asada, asada fries, and more.

Burritos and tacos offer a variety of choices of meat and the option to create your own burrito.

Dinner prices vary with the most expensive meals around $25.

The huarache de asada was meat and a green salsa laid on multiple tortillas, with queso fresco and sour cream drizzled on top. The salsa was very flavorful, the meat was grilled and soft. However, not having rice or beans included on the side was a surprise.

The menudo, offered in cup or bowl sizes was flavorful. But in the cup size the ratio between liquid and honeycomb meat was not well balanced.

The crunch and taste of the potato tacos were good. However the aesthetic left a lot to be desired. While every other plate came in a ceramic plate or bowl, this one came in a plastic bowl container that is meant for food to go.

The interior of the restaurant is filled with colors, including pink, teal and yellow, though pink is the main color displayed. There are pink flowers hanging from the walls and sections of the ceiling.

Their menu is extensive, filled with many different options to choose from, there is breakfast to dinner to desserts. Close to the entrance, there is a walk-up counter for to-go orders with the menu on television screens above the cashiers. Customers can also walk to the hostess counter and wait to be seated.

On each table there is a wood burned drink menu.

The bilingual Spanish and English menu had the classic dishes such as, enchiladas, soft or hard tacos, soups, tostadas, nachos and many more. On the sweeter side, they offer waffles, crepes and pancakes. Under the pastries section they offer cheesecake, Dubai chocolate or cream deep strawberries, and neapolitan flan.
