The Wilson Library hosted its first Makerspace event for the fall semester on Aug 28, in the Makerspace room to inspire creativity and relieve stress as the semester begins.
The event had various crafts for students to take part in, such as creating personalized buttons, making stickers and painting on canvases. The space also offered 3D printing and crocheting.
As soft music played in the background, students quietly worked on their own creative projects.
Sierra Brown, junior psychology major and crochet club member, said she spends most of her time in the Makerspace.
“You can just go, and it’s meant to be a creative space and just a place where you can relax and do any kind of thing that you want,” Brown said.
The Makerspace hosts craft days at the beginning and end of every semester.
“(It’s) just a way to have a relaxing time before the semester gets hectic and have another relaxing time when all the hecticness and busyness is finished,” said Madison Calleros, a Makerspace technician.
“Even though someone may not be creatively talented, it is still a really good way to calm your mind and relax,” Calleros said.
Students at last week’s event were most drawn to button-making. With hand drawn illustrations, they could make several small art pieces.
“I hope students take interest in the Makerspace,” Calleros said. “And they choose to come back for more workshops and events,” Calleros said.
“I was keeping an eye out on when they would have an event,” said Monique Hernandez, a freshman psychology major who attended last week’s event.
“I’ve been really stressed lately with coming into college, so it’s nice to get my mind off of it,” Hernandez said. “I can go back to my homework with a fresh mind and I feel like it’s just nice to create something.”
“Whether you’re creative or not… people would definitely benefit from Makerspace,” Freshman Abigail Pastrana said.
