The La Verne Leopards lost to the Redlands Bulldogs, 29-14, Saturday in Ortmayer Stadium.
Head coach Richard Sanchez was disappointed with the loss after a successful game against Pomona-Pitzer.
“I feel horrible about it,” Sanchez said. “We made progress every step of the way and I think we fell back.”
“Got to watch the film and see exactly what happened on defense… our defense couldn’t hold up to their front,” he said.
After a scoreless first quarter, La Verne started the scoring early in the second quarter when junior quarterback Brian Rudden rushed eight yards untouched for a touchdown.
“I went to go look for my guys and they’re all guarded but no one was guarding me so I just took it from there,” Rudden said.
Sophomore kicker Joshua Workizer’s extra point was successful, bringing the score to 7-0.
“You know, every day, in practice I continue to work with my kicking coach on the basics,” Workizer said.
The Bulldogs scored twice after Rudden’s touchdown on a safety and a field goal to make the score 7-5.
At the 0:35 mark of the second quarter junior running back Tyler McCown caught an 8-yard pass to give La Verne its second touchdown.
“We had been running that same play over and over again,” McCown said. “So we knew that they’d probably be expecting it and that play action was just perfect timing.”
McCown also said that Redlands had a tough defense.
“This is a very physical defense and I think matching physicality with physicality is the best way to go through it,” McCown said.
A successful extra point kick from Workizer moved the score to 14-5.
La Verne was unable to continue the momentum and did not score for the rest of the game.
At 11:03 of the third quarter Redlands junior running back Donovan Maxey-Parler ran nine yards to give the Bulldogs a touchdown.
A successful extra point by sophomore kicker Kadyn Butcher brought the score to 14-12.
With 1:13 left in the third quarter junior quarterback Tobey Schmidt ran one yard to give Redlands another touchdown.
Butcher completed another successful extra point to bring the score to 19-14.
Early into the fourth quarter at 12:21 Butcher completed a 21-yard field goal, bringing the score up to 22-14.
In the fourth quarter with 5:52 left, senior wide receiver Julian Walker caught a 38-yard pass touchdown to give Redlands their final touchdown of the game.
Butcher completed a final successful extra point bringing the final score to 29-14.
During the game junior wide receiver Jimmy Rumsey broke La Verne’s all-time receptions record and the all-time receiving yards record., with 146 receptions and 2,095 yards.
“It never really was a doubt in my mind, you know, coming here today I knew I was gonna have to break those records,” Rumsey said.
The Leopards are currently 1-6 overall and 1-5 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Conference. The Leopards will play their final home game of the season against the Chapman Panthers at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ortmayer Stadium.
