To kick off Hispanic Heritage Month, the Campus Activities Board Committee hosted Casa De Los Leos on Tuesday in Citrus Lawn. Approximately 100 students and other faculty gathered for the event.
Hispanic Heritage month is from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
The event was co-hosted by student organization Improving Dreams Equity Access and Success, or IDEAS, for an event centered around Hispanic culture, music, food and community involvement.
The event brought students of different backgrounds together.
Carinna Ramirez, CAB multicultural chair, worked on the event, which included a live Latin band and a variety of Latin American food options.
Crafts at the event included decorating wooden picture frames.
Students who attended got food vouchers and ULV tote bags decorated with flags from various Latin American countries within the logo.
Food choices included empanadas, pupusas, rice, beans and aguas fresca. There were various meat and veggie options among the empanadas and pupusas for all to enjoy.
“I think that students get the opportunity to learn about different cultures, especially when it’s not their own,” said Brooklyn Clark, junior economics major. “You get to have a good time, eat good food and really connect with the Hispanic resources at our school.”
Students filled the tables socializing, eating and decorating frames as they listened to the Latin music. Some danced.
“What made me come out and host the crafts was to show others that there is a wider community to the campus than what we see everyday and to make sure everyone gets involved,” IDEAS secretary Jazmyn Rosalez-Velez said.
“It’s nice to see the community actively building on campus,” treasurer of IDEAS Kesia Loma Quintero said.
