Photography exhibit explores basics

The Irene Carlson Gallery of Photography is exhibiting the works of photographer Joaquín Palting’s “Subject/Object” exhibition.

The environment of the exhibition feels quiet and peaceful. The white walls enhanced the gray and black colors of some of the photographs for those browsing through the framed photos. 

At the entrance of the exhibit, is a table with information about the artist, his vision and the meaning of his photographs. 

Palting’s “Subject/Object” photo are of the landscape of the inner chambers of the caves located in California and images of the water in the Pacific Ocean.

“I like how Palting was able to take the picture so close that you can see the texture of the rocks, which you do not see very often,” said Vincente Rodriguez, sophomore photography major. 

Palting decided to have the theme of illustrations of the environment. The “Subject/Object” exhibition takes a close look at the formation of the cave, with a close look at the mineral and coarseness of the formation of the stones. 

Chris Rodriguez, senior photography major, liked the light in photos. 

“I like the way the lighting is shown on the rocks in the photos,” Rodriguez said. “Also, how close the texture is shown in each of the photos.” 

In some of the photos, water is shown to fill the entire frame of the camera, showing how grand the ocean is. In other photos the water is shown to have a path or create a path, exhibiting how serene and beautiful the waterfall can be. 

“You can see the different qualities and points of view of nature through the photographs,” Liberty Garcia, sophomore photography major, said. “The water is shown to be soft and the rocks are shown as a rough texture contrasting each other and yet looking like they belong together.” 

The “Subject/Object” exhibition  runs through April 5. The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the ground floor of Miller Hall.
