Dr. Terrence Deal, an author and the founder of Terrence E. Deal Leadership Institute at the University of La Verne, died on June 4 from a heart attack. He was 84.
Dr. Deal was a part of the Deal-Redman family, who have had more than 60 members attend the University of La Verne. He graduated from the University in 1961 with a bachelor’s degree in history, and he later earned a Ph.D. in educational administration and sociology from Stanford University.
Dr. Deal went by the nickname Terry rather than Terrence.
“Uncle Terry was so full of life and humor,” said Donna Redman, associate dean for the La Fetra College of Education and Dr. Deal’s cousin. “Probably one of the most notable things about him that we remember as his family was the embellishment that he tended to give to stories. We were never quite sure what was factual or what was made up. Storytelling was always a large part of his writing and is what made his work so entertaining.”
His family remembers him as someone who was constantly offering support and encouragement to those around him, notably in their professional lives.
“With his support and encouragement, I was able to achieve tenure and eventually promotion to full professor, which occurred just last year,” Redman said. “I’m so glad he was still alive to see the fruits of his labor. He was my biggest cheerleader.”
Dr. Deal was largely hailed at ULV for his involvement on campus and his frequent work with the university long after he graduated. His biggest contribution to the university was the Terrence E. Deal Leadership Institute.
Dr. Deal was also a prolific author, with over 40 books authored or co-authored in his lifetime. Additionally, he frequently wrote articles regarding organization, leadership and related subjects.
His family best remembers Dr. Deal for his stories and attitude towards both work and his life.
“I don’t think he ever gave himself credit for being really smart,” said Peggy Redman, emeritus professor of education and Dr. Deal’s cousin. “He’s one of the most dedicated teachers and supporters of teachers I’ve ever known.
“I remember him having a wonderful sense of humor,” Peggy Redman added. “He was one of the greatest storytellers I’ve ever known. Sometimes they weren’t totally accurate but they were fascinatingly interesting.”
Dr. Deal’s ability to encourage and push others to be their best was one of his most beloved and memorable traits.
“Terry always encouraged me and others to push the envelope,” Donna Redman said. “Never settle for mediocrity, even if it might get you into some trouble. Something he always said that has stayed with me was that ‘If you want to make a mark, you have to take a risk.’”
The University held a celebration of Dr. Deal’s life and legacy on Oct. 4.
