The University’s Office of First Generation and Peer Mentoring held the second session of its new monthly series of the semester, Our Stories, featuring Ngoc Bui, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of psychology, and Zion Grant-Freeman, senior psychology major, on Tuesday.
November is National First Generation Student month and it was celebrated by the University this past week with events that highlighted these students, which is only one example of how well the University of La Verne does in recognizing their unique challenges.
At one time or another, we all have to fill out some type of application that asks us to state our ethnicity. Some think nothing of the question and quickly check it off and go on to the next one. Others choose the “other” option to state their unique individual heritage. Many check it off knowing that their ethnicity is the key to being on equal footing with the rest of society and having the opportunity to further themselves.
