It is many sports fans’ favorite time of the year – baseball season has finally returned. After a long winter, it is time to reignite rivalries and bring out the memes of trash talking. Spring training wins and performances built up the hype toward the regular season, and the words “play ball” will be said again.
Sports fans are some of the most passionate people. However, some take it too far. It has come to the point in which teams fight until the final buzzer and fans fight to the death.
Teams taunt one another during games, often through controversial extracurricular activities that result in more resentment between the teams and an act of retaliation that the governing body of the sport must address.
In sports there are fans who the teams rely on to show support by attending games, buying merchandise and even trash-talking with the fans of rival teams. Sometimes the trash-talking can escalate to violence, like the incident that happened after the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Opening Day victory against their rival the San Francisco Giants.
Last semester I wrote a commentary piece about the 2010 Major League Baseball season, in which I said that most likely it would be the same teams going to the playoffs this year. I was not completely wrong, but there were some teams that took me by surprise.
