First off, as an alumnus of the University of La Verne and a founding member of Phi Delta Theta, I am extremely disappointed in the fraternity for the actions committed following the preference dinner.
In your March 27, 1998, edition of the Campus Times, Angelica Martinez wrote an article entitled "Variety Show Reveals Hidden Talents." I was surprised to find out that the Black National Anthem had been changed from "Lift Every Voice" to "We Shall Overcome."
Athletes at the University of La Verne and other NCAA schools are subject to strict rules regarding how long they are eligible to play. Athletes are eligible to actually participate for four years, but have five years in which to play the four, using one as a red-shirt year. If the athlete does not meet these guidelines the universities can be sanctioned by the NCAA.
With the closing of Third Street in front of Founders Hall, Illumination took place Monday night. Each prince and princess, dressed at their best, was escorted by a friend or family member down the red carpet while many La Verne students cheered for their favorite candidate.
