It’s October, which means that the holiday season is just around the corner. Actually the holidays seem to be approaching a lot sooner than they actually are. 

The United States has morphed into a place of constant fear, where the next place for a mass shooting could be anywhere; bullet-proof backpacks are now on back to school shelves, active shooter drills at school and in workplaces are standard, and educators are learning how to treat gunshot wounds. 

On April 12, two black men were arrested at a Starbucks in Philadelphia. The men were not disobeying any laws, making any sort of scene or bothering anyone.  One of them, Rashon Nelson, asked an employee if he could use the bathroom upon walking into the Starbucks and was told it was for paying customers only. He tried to explain to the worker that he and his associate were waiting for their third party to start a business meeting and would not be there long, but the manager decided to call 911 after the men refused to buy anything or leave the store.

Starbucks has announced it will donate all its leftover food to charity in an effort to provide meals for those who struggle with hunger and food insecurity. The announcement was made on the coffee chain’s website last Tuesday and we’d like to praise Starbucks for this positive decision.

Earlier this month one of La Verne’s local Starbucks had its health permit suspended for a week after the Los Angeles County Public Health Services came across a cockroach infestation during an inspection.

Starbucks coffee has, for years, been pouring millions of gallons of pure clean water down the drain.
