Briana Gomez, a broadcast journalism major at the University of La Verne, died Aug. 1 in a fatal rollover crash. She was 31.

Nine students from the University of La Verne won seven Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence awards for work published and broadcast via the University’s student media outlets.

The La Verne Police Department and the FBI are continuing to investigate an apparent hate crime involving an online threat and arson that occurred on campus last Thursday and Friday, prompting the cancellation of classes.

In response to last week's apparent hate crimes –  a racist threat on social media directed at a specific group of students, followed by arson in a student's car – several students rallied in Johnson Family Plaza to condemn these actions, while faculty discussed the appropriate response at the Faculty Senate meeting Monday.

University President Devorah Lieberman and Provost Jonathan Reed presented a draft of a resolution on Oct. 26 to students and faculty listing the actions they plan to take in the coming weeks and months to improve the treatment of minority groups on campus.
