When the men’s basketball team met the Occidental Tigers on Feb. 26, they were cheered not only by fans in the bleachers, but by 10 students who have attended many games together. Chelsea Sleight, Ashley Gillis, Whitney Kranz, Alyssa Cole, Megan Moore, Jennifer Mau, Tiona Hobson, Courtney Cooley and Lauren Reed have institutionalized their cheerleading efforts by wearing matching t-shirts emblazoned with “ULV BBall” on the front and “The 6th Player” on the back. / photo by Jaclyn Dino

The notion of school spirit and cheering at university athletic events has become a hot topic recently.

In a pickle between third baseman Aaron Coopman and catcher Mike Moretti, Redlands Bulldog Jefre Johnson is tagged out at home plate in the first inning. La Verne went on to lose to Redlands in the first game, 5-4, but came back to trounce the Bulldogs in the second game, 16-5. Scoring runs has not been a problem for the Leopards this season; however, scoring more than their opponents has been as of late.

Freshman Lance Powell completed his first steeplechase and placed in fifth with a time of 7:03 last Saturday. Powell will compete in the 5,000 meter run Saturday in Las Vegas. Amid the sound of bats clanking and balls hitting gloves, first year University of La Verne softball coach Julie Smith tosses around jokes and encouragement, providing a fun and relaxed atmosphere to the sometimes grueling three-hour practices.

Leopards lose final game at home

Finishing the 2007-2008 campaign, the men’s basketball team lost to nationally ranked Occidental, 67-57, Tuesday night at the Frantz Athletic Court.

Defending against the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen, sophomore Matt Heyd competes for the ball against the Regals’ Chad Acerboni on the Frantz Athletic Court on Feb. 9. The end result was a Leopard loss, 82-66. The Leopards also lost to Whittier College, 81-70 on Wednesday in their second match of the season. Losses drop ULV to 9-12 overall

With only four games remaining before the conference tournament, the University of La Verne men’s basketball team was defeated by Whittier College Wednesday night at Dave Jacobs Court, 81-70 in their second meeting of the season.

Junior forward Kyle Luhnow started the game against the Willamette Bearcats by winning possession of the ball at the Frantz Athletic Court on Nov. 30. The Leopards went on to win their third consecutive game, 84-81. ULV had their winning streak snapped on Wednesday as they fell on the road to Chapman, 55-53. A three-game win streak for the University of La Verne men’s basketball team, which culminated with an 84-81 victory over Willamette, came to an end on Wednesday night.

Students saddle up for last dance

University of La Verne students came together for the final dance of the fall semester.

With dreams of becoming a sports anchor or making it in the entertainment world as a reporter or movie producer, Tiona Hobson, a senior from Upland, helped take the women’s volleyball team to the NCAA West Regional Semifinals this season. Hobson plans to graduate in May with a degree in broadcasting and an emphasis in television. She finished the season with 116 kills and 24 blocks and was voted co-captain of the team. / photo by Jaclyn Dino

Based on the votes of her teammates earlier this season, senior middle blocker Tiona Hobson was given the opportunity to lead the La Verne’s women’s volleyball team as a co-captain.
