Doug Carter, a junior business administration major attending the University of La Verne, was nominated for a National American Farmer Degree by the Future Farmers of America.
The degree, FFA’s highest honor, was awarded to Carter at the FFA national convention held in Kansas City, Mo. Carter was nominated for the award on the basis of outstanding achievement in livestock projects, leader ship activities and management on his 55 acre ranch, which he and his brother Ken and sister Karen run.
“I’m generally not very emotional about these things,” explained Carter, “But this award is the culmination of 11 years of hard work. I’ve been raising steer since the fourth grade and running a farm since I was a junior in high school.
“I’ve been an active member of the FFA for a number of years. I was chapter president and treasurer of my section. When I heard that I won, I was really excited; the FFA is made up of members between the ages of 14-21, so this is my last year as an active member. There is an alumni group, and I am looking forward to possibly joining that segment and continuing my association with the FFA.”
“Farming is a business,” continued Carter. “You have to set budgets, and the marketing aspect is unlimited. The American economy is based on farming; food is still our number one industry over raw materials and oil. I’m proud to belong to FFA. Also, the profits are great.”
Doug’s younger brother Ken, also a member of FFA and a student at ULV, stated “I’m really glad. I am hoping that someday I can also achieve this honor.”
Doug’s father Warren, a past member of FFA, noted, “We’re all proud of Doug. When I was in FFA, the most I had won was statewide recognition. Now we finally have a national winner in our family.”
The FFA National American Farmer Degree is awarded to only one in 1,500 of its 482,611 members and is sponsored by, among others, J.I. Case, Federal Land Banks, Chevrolet Division of General Motors, Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Production Credit Association and the national FFA General Fund.
