The women’s soccer team, fighting for sole possession of second place in SCIAC competition, came out swinging and knocked out Redlands 2-0 Wednesday at Redlands.
“We didn’t play to our potential, we didn’t play like we know how, but we still won and that’s what counts,” said sophomore mid-fielder Lisa Thomas.
La Verne dominated possession in the first half as Redlands crossed midfield only a handful of times.
Twenty minutes into the game sophomore Ana Delgado took a shot and had it bounce off the side of the goal but she aggressively followed her shot, this time the only thing it bounced off of was the back of the net, giving La Verne a 1-0 lead.
The only highlight for Redlands in the first half was a shot at La Verne’s goal that sailed wide and they never came close again in the half.
The ball went back and forth in the early stages of the second half but La Verne gained the upper hand as they scored again, thanks to a penalty kick made by freshman mid-fielder Amber Hall. “I felt a lot of pressure, but I knew I could do it,” said Hall.
Hall is three for three this season at penalty kicks.
Redlands threatened to score late in the game as a Bulldog player broke away from the La Verne team and had only the goalie to beat, but sophomore goalkeeper Tiffany Hall came charging out of the goal, snatching the ball away, killing the attempt.
“We practice a lot on me coming out to get those, so I was comfortable charging out to get it,” said Tiffany Hall.
After the game Head Coach Wendy Zwissler said, “It was nice to play so bad and still win.”We felt like we played to their level and we don’t want to fall in to that trap.”
The Lady Leo’s continue SCIAC competition tomorrow against Pomona-Pitzer at 11 a.m. at Pomona.
“Pomona has a really good defense, we will have to release the ball quicker to our open players,”said Zwissler.
The whole team stated that they will play better against Pomona then they did against Redlands, and said they will be fired up to play tomorrow.
“We need to win the next four games to finish in sole possession of second place,” said Zwissler.
