Track to make run at SCIAC title

Head coach Pat Widolff hopes to rebound from the disappointing season of a year ago. The University of La Verne track team has attended four preseason meets, preparing them for a run at the conference championship starting March 4 in Claremont.

“Our goal as a team is to always shoot for the top three spots in our conference,” said Widolff.

Widolff has seen much improvement from last year, and attributes a great deal of it to assistant coach Katrina Hall.

Hall is an All-American and former SCIAC runner of the year. She holds the women’s school records for the triple jump and the 4×100 meter relay. Hall not only coaches, but is also working on her master’s in education.

“Katrina coaches the middle distance runners, does the recruiting and goes to school. She is a huge contribution to the team,” said Widolff.

Widolff has seen good things from his runners already, and has a potential record-breaker this year in senior Dan Eckardt.

Last weekend at Pomona-Pitzer, Eckardt ran the 800 four and a half seconds off the school record of 1:57.33.

Freshman Amber Clayton ran a 12.87 in the 100, and 27.40 in the 200. Sophomore Kephyan Wright-Sheppard ran the 100 in 11.25 seconds, and the 200 in 22.82 seconds, and is a top contender in both events for ULV.

This year’s squad is filled with underclassmen. Twenty-three out of the 45 participants are freshmen, and only six seniors lead the team.

The Leopards will take on Whittier, Cal Lutheran and the host, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, for their first scoring match of the year on March 4.
