Editors layout plans for new semester

Writing seems to come natural to Danny Craig and Alisha Rosas, but leadership will soon be the forefront of their journalistic work. The end of a semester signifies change. With the fall semester coming to a close, the Communications Department is planning for that change. This week new editors were announced for next semester’s Campus Times and La Verne Magazine staffs. Alisha Rosas was named editor in chief of the Campus Times, and Danny Craig was named editor in chief of La Verne Magazine.

Rosas, a junior journalism major, currently works as editor in chief for La Verne Magazine. Next semester she will return as the editor in chief for the Campus Times.

In her five semesters on the Campus Times staff, Rosas has worked as a staff writer, arts and entertainment editor, managing editor and editorial director. She considers the editor in chief position as the next step for her to take as a journalist.

“I think it’s my turn to overview a publication like the Campus Times,” said Rosas. “I’ve gained a good amount of experience with the Campus Times and I’ve been writing for the Riverside Press-Enterprise. I think that I have the experience and I can help others.”

Eric Bishop, Campus Times adviser, who offered her the position, recognized her experience and talents.

“Alisha has demonstrated skill and the ability to be a leader throughout her time on staff,” Bishop said. “She’s worked hard, she’s moved up through the ranks and she’s earned the position.”

In February, Rosas will help guide 30 new and returning writers to produce 12 issues of the Campus Times.

Rosas said she believes that having a large staff will help bring more diversity to the stories and to the face of the paper. She enjoys working with people and is looking forward to the start of the spring semester.

“I think its going to be a really exciting challenge for me,” Rosas said.

The greatest obstacle that Rosas foresees and hopes to overcome is the fear that new writers have about asking questions and also the anxiety and apprehension of having their homework published weekly.

“I consider myself pretty approachable, so I think that maybe that will be the first thing I need to get done,” she said. “I want to let everyone know that it’s OK to ask questions and that everyone has been scared. There are things that I still am scared of, and we all have a lot to learn.”

Bishop said that Rosas maintains a positive attitude and has the ability to work well with people. As editor in chief, he expects out of Rosas, “the epitome of good leadership, solid writing in her columns and an award-winning newspaper.”

“My No. 1 goal is to create a staff that is confident in their writing abilities,” said Rosas.

Craig said that he also looks forward to working with a group of talented writers when he returns as editor in chief of La Verne Magazine next semester.

“Going into it I notice that we have a lot of really strong writers,” Craig said. “I would just hope to take all of their talents and what they’re going to bring to the magazine and put forward a publication that reflects that.”

Craig is a senior journalism major who has written for ULV publications over the past three semesters. In his junior year, Craig was a staff writer and then went on to be features editor of the Campus Times. In the fall of his senior year, he worked as sports editor for the newspaper as well as a staff writer for the magazine. Craig has also written for the San Gabriel Valley Tribune and the Pasadena Star News.

He said that he thinks the easiest part of his job as editor in chief of the La Verne Magazine will be working with his staff of seven writers.

“A lot of [the writers] are my friends and a lot of them are people that I’ve already worked with,” Craig said. “It’s comforting knowing that this is my first time being editor in chief and knowing that I’m doing it with a bunch of people who I already really respect.”

Craig said that he likes being in an editorial position and is excited to take on the extra responsibility as editor in chief.

“I like talking to people about the ideas that they come up with, and being the individual that people feel they can go to to help clarify an idea.”

George Keeler, La Verne Magazine adviser, approached Craig last week about taking on the editor in chief position.

“Danny is one of our top writers on the publication,” Keeler said. “He’s reliable, he’s honest in his endeavors and we look forward to him to be a leader in that way.”

The job offer came as a surprise to Craig. “I was kind of taken back. It was pretty wild.”

As editor in chief, Craig will be in charge of an award-winning magazine. Keeler expects Craig to demonstrate top writing and leadership skills, to meet all deadlines and to keep the standard of La Verne Magazine in the high area of excellence.

Craig also said that working as editor in chief of the magazine is more of an honor than a job.

“When I chose journalism as a major I was taking a big risk because I wasn’t sure that it was for me,” he said. “Its neat to be leaving knowing that I made the right choice.”
