Faculty from virtually every discipline at ULV gathered in the Wilson Library to display their work and honor two of their own on Nov. 8.
Jeffrey Kahan and Kenneth Marcus were honored with the Young Scholars Achievement Award during the fourth Annual Faculty Research and Professional Activity Day.
Faculty displayed their research for the community to view and talk about.
“It is a showcase of research, people showing what they have done,” said Julius Walecki, professor of ecomonics. Walecki’s project focused on the economic questions raised by trade agreements.
His project called “The Future of Free Trade Agreements: Benefits or Costs?” pointed out potential problems in future free trade agreements with the countries of Peru, Colombia, Panama and South Korea.
Among other displays, was Photography Professor Gary Colby’s “Six Toy Soldiers,” which were large images of toy soldiers, and Dan Campana’s “Ideology of the Family: A Case Study for Christian Narrative Ethics.”
At noon, the ceremony for Kahan and Marcus began with remarks by President Stephen Morgan and Provost Alden Reimonenq.
Marcus, associate professor of history, did his research on Arnold Schoenberg and the role he had played in the émigré, musical and academic community in Los Angeles from the 1930s to the 1950s.
“The research took me the better part of 20 years,” Marcus said. “It’s really interesting.”
Marcus was the first to receive his award from the president after discussing his topic for a few minutes and receiving warm praise.
“Thanks for all the great work you’re doing,” Morgan said.
Kahan, associate professor of English, was the next to receive the Young Scholars Achievement Award, with his topic on his current research on 19th century child actor Master Betty, a book on the “King Lear,” a collection of essays on the Renaissance.
“Most thanks go to my students,” Kahan said.
For those who missed Faculty Research Day, much of the research is still on display in Wilson Library.
