‘Spreading the love’ with PBJ

On Monday the Campus Activities Board hosted a “Spread the Love” sandwich-making event for the homeless.

The event took place from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the President’s Dining Room.

“We did this last semester and it was very successful so I wanted to do it again,” Erika Barajas, CAB philanthropy chair, said.

Last semester, CAB made about 75 sandwiches and this time Barajas was determined to make even more.

About 20 people attended the event to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that will be delivered to a local homeless shelter and then distributed.

Some people decorated brown paper bags, while others wrote notes and drew pictures to stick inside.

“Since the theme is ‘Spread the Love,’ I am attempting to explode my love onto these sandwiches,” Tyler Shepard, a senior business and finance major, said.

Some people got creative with their sandwich making skills whether it was an interesting ingredient combination or the way they cut them. Some people even took the time to cut off the crust on the sandwiches.

“I’ve been attempting not to make the same sandwich twice,” Shepard said.

Ryan Figgs, a senior business marketing major stopped by the table to make a few sandwiches and to offer his support.

“I love the Campus Activities Board,” Figgs said. “I want to help somebody I love help somebody they love.”

Regardless of the small turnout, Barajas made it clear that she would continue to make sandwiches until all of the ingredients were gone.

“I am on CAB, so I thought I would come by and help a fellow CAB member out,” Naime Laskar, a sophomore undeclared major, said.

She has participated in similar events before and enjoys lending a helping hand to those who are less fortunate.

“They really enjoy when we deliver the bags and stuff,” Laskar said.
