The women’s tennis team competed against No. 19 ranked Trinity College on Friday at the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
La Verne faced an unfortunate loss of 6-3 to the Bantams.
With the loss, the Leopards fall to 9-2 on the season with both losses coming against nationally-ranked teams.
During the doubles matches, sophomore Andrea Madrigal and freshman Bridget Etchegaray brought the first team point.
Madrigal and Etchegary successfully beat seniors Regan Cherna and Senzo Mauve-Maphisa with a score of 8-6.
“Andrea and Bridget winning was insane,” sophomore Shenelle Trujillo said. “We’re playing so good right now.”
But doubles partners junior Laina Matsuda and senior Jeanette Losaria, lost in their match.
Trinity’s sophomore duo Melita Ferjanic and Morgan Feldman took the victory with a win of 8-4 over Matsuda and Losaria.
Leopards senior Allison Moncrief and sophomore Megan Soucy, also faced defeat against seniors Elizabeth Gerber and Caroline Gagne with a score of 8-1.
The team faced four more losses in the singles matches.
Doubles victor Madrigal lost 6-0, 7-5 to Ferjanic.
Trinity’s Feldman had another win over Losaria, with a score of 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Moncrief also lost her singles match to Mauve-Maphisa.
Mauve-Maphisa won the set with a score of 6-1, 6-2.
La Verne freshman Lauren Torres was also among the setback.
Although winning her first set, she was unable to hold for the win.
Gagne took the victory as Torres lost, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Matsuda had a great triumph over Cherna, winning 6-3, 6-1.
Down 3-0 in the beginning of her match, she came back for the win.
“[I want] to stay undefeated as long as I can,” Matsuda said.
She has not lost one singles match this season.
Matsuda also hopes to go to nationals in doubles.
Recalling the challenge of getting in her own way, Etchegaray was able to pull through in the end.
She received the third team point of the match for the Leopards.
Etchegaray won her singles match against Gerber, with a score of 7-5, 7-5.
“I was just trying to stay positive and patient,” Etchegaray said. “My team cheering me on really motivated me to push through and win.”
The goal is to improve as a team.
“You just have to keep focus and realize what is working and what isn’t, and play your game,” Etchegary said.
The Leopards travel for their next match against No. 30 Whittier at 2 p.m. Friday.
“(The) overall season is going really good,” Trujillo said. “We’re a close knit team this year.”
