Smith steps down as softball coach


Julie Smith has stepped down as head softball coach and assistant athletic director, Interim Athletic Director Scott Winterburn said Thursday morning.

In her 11 seasons as head coach, La Verne never had a losing season. She leaves with an overall record of 287-185 and a .608 winning percentage

Smith guided the program to three Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season titles, three SCIAC tournament titles and four appreances in the NCAA playoffs.

During her tenure, Smith had 36 of her players named first-team All-SCIAC. Smith also won a gold medal with Team USA softball in the 1996 Summer Olympics.

Henry Moranchel will serve as the interim head coach for the 2019 season, Winterburn said. Moranchel has been on Smith’s staff for three years, serving as assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator for the past two. Moranchel is a La Verne alumnus.
