As of May 1, the University of La Verne’s Campus Safety staff members will be issuing citations to all vehicles with parking violations.
For the past six months Campus Safety has been issuing Parking Violation warnings to those vehicles that were parked illegally.
Once the warning was issued a staff member would record it in the log book. And if they found other violations from the same vehicle, they would inform the La Verne Police Department.
Many times it was hard for LVPD to issue a parking ticket before the offender leaves the scene, which is why Campus Safety is stepping in. Another reason Campus Safety is helping out is because parking violations are not priority for LVPD.
“We are not automatically going to issue a warning in every case,” said John Lentz, director of campus safety and transportation.
The only time a warning will be issued to a vehicle is if the violation is unclear.
Lentz said that people complain to him about parking violators. Therefore, something needed to be done.
There are people parking their vehicles in reserved places such as the handicap parking spots. Also there are people parking in the carpool parking spaces, in which the sign clearly states that parking permits are required.
A driver can park in carpool parking spots anytime during the week after 5 p.m. One can also park in those spots on weekends when the carpool permits are not enforced.
The new implemented rule is scheduled for a six month trial period.
“We are putting this in the paper to let people know that we are taking a more aggressive approach,” said Lentz.
LVPD and Campus Safety both met with President Stephen Morgan to discuss the new regulation and he agreed to allow them a six month trial period.
