Morrow to leave ULV for Fullerton

Gloria Morrow, associate professor of psychology, is leaving the University of La Verne during the end of the semester to further pursue her professional goals at Cal State University Fullerton.

These professional goals will include being the associate professor of counseling, teaching a counseling program and fully pursuing her research interests.

Morrow taught in the undergraduate and graduate program in psychology and the behavioral sciences at ULV. She is the Director of Clinical Training for the doctoral program.

At the beginning of her eight years at ULV, she was an undergraduate in the CAPA program and worked as a part-time faculty member.

She was then offered a fellowship through the “Grow Your Own” program to increase diversity among faculty.

“I have been afforded many wonderful opportunities to grow and develop during my time at La Verne,” said Morrow.

Her best experience at ULV was working with colleagues and becoming active in the Coalition for Diversity Task Force and the Multicultural Institute on campus.

“I love the campus. It is the most beautiful campus I have ever been to. Most of all I love the students and especially being a mentor to African-American students,” Morrow said.

Morrow said she has learned a great amount of information from her students.

“As a professor with a high regard to students, I have learned so much from them,” she said.

Morrow also gave some advice to her colleagues. “I believe that all faculty should take the opportunity to learn from their students,” she said.

Valerie Jordan, professor of psychology and chair of the doctoral program, is one of many colleagues that will miss Morrow.

“I have mixed feelings about her leaving ULV. On one hand I am very happy for the professional opportunity it has for her, but I am very sad because it is a tremendous loss for La Verne, the Psychology Department and the students,” said Jordan.

Many characteristics come to mind for Jordan as she described Morrow with words such as “professional, integrity, respectful of colleagues and students, caring and extremely insightful.”

Jordan also said that Morrow is “an outstanding colleague.” “She has made tremendous contributions to the doctoral program and Psychology Department,” she said.

Assistant Professor of Psychology and Executive Director of Multicultural Research and Campus Diversity, Christina Ayala-Alcantar, had few a personal thoughts to say about Morrow.

“She was my mentor. She went out of her way to provide me constructive feedback. Gloria was always there to listen and had an open-door policy.

“She was a great leader and challenged the department critically, along with having some great insights,” said Ayala-Alcantar.

Ayala-Alcantar also said that Morrow was a critical key figure getting and implementing the grant for the James Irvine Foundation.

“Her knowledge helped us develop a survey protocol that helped us access the academic supports and barriers for African-American students,” said Ayala-Alcantar.

Morrow said she will miss many people at ULV. “I will miss the people, faculty, students, administrators, and staff who really went out of their way to make me feel a part of the community. I will also miss the opportunity to continue to help our community to have a deeper appreciation for diversity,” said Morrow.

Morrow is excited about the new opportunity she has at Cal State Fullerton.

“I look forward to continue mentoring students, to enhance my research agenda and to build relationships in a new community,” she said.
