Train show chugs into fairgrounds

The Great American Train Show was held Saturday and Sunday at the Fairplex in Pomona. Newcomers, experts and model building enthusiasts were able to buy model trains and collectable cars. All aboard the tram leading to the annual Great American Train Show. Families and train enthusiasts alike chugged their way to Fairplex to wander the two halls and peruse train models and items to add to their collections.

The exhibit took place this past Saturday and Sunday at the Fairplex and was perfect for all ages as senior citizens and toddlers roamed the aisles. Siomara Villeda visited the exhibit with her husband Alfonso and their 5-year-old son Anthony. Self-proclaimed train fanatics, father and son drag her mum along for the ride each time the exhibit is held.

“Anthony loves trains but I know Alfonso buys the trains for himself,” she said, “It’s something that we can do together.”

In the first exhibit, tables lined the way displaying replicas of diesel trains, villages and even “perfect pines.”

Merchandise such as train t-shirts, hats, buttons, toys and videos were also being sold to train lovers.

The second part featured exhibit train modular makers showing showing off their craftsmanship. The N Track Modular Model Railroad Club from Orange County, display their work at train shows, museums and private shows.

Oscar Arrieta joined the club a year ago after watching the clubs work at a show.

“As a child I was always into models and very mechanically inclined and I like to build things, so the club was great for me,” he said.

Jeff Sicklesteel, the club’s president, holds his members work in high regard as the club displays their work at 13 shows a year. A retired research and develop engineer, Sicklesteel loves working with trains since each model requires electrical skills and hand craftsmanship.

Children and adults alike enjoy the exhibit’s atmosphere as fathers wander from area to area with a child either clinging to a hand or riding on their shoulders.

Vince Diaz visited the exhibit with his son Joseph. The two discussed the different types of trains and which ones they wanted to buy. “He loves it and so do I, “ said Diaz, “I plan to continue to bring him to the shows. It’s a great dad and son thing to do. It’s good stuff.”

Fair features eclectic art
