‘Encounters’

The art department will present “Encounters,” seven temporary installations by different members of the studio art faculty throughout the fall semester. 

Each installation will be on display for 11 days through Dec. 13 on the second floor of the Arts and Communications Building, near room 212. 

‘Secret Garden’

The Harris Gallery will feature artists Rochelle Botello, Gary Brewer, Jason David and Rema Ghuloum in “Secret Garden,” a group exhibit that uses paint and sculpture to accentuate the physical and illusionistic relationships between objects and images. 

The exhibit will be on display through Oct. 24, with an opening reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

‘Ayé’ 

Composer and percussionist Andrés Espinoza will present a night of original modern jazz from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sept. 29 in Morgan Auditorium.

Latin Grammy nominated artist Calixto Oviedo will also preform, along with other noteworthy Latin jazz musicians. 

The event will kick off this year’s Sundays at the Morgan concert series.

Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

Colson Whitehead 

Colson Whitehead, a Pulitzer-Prize winning literary artist, will discuss his recent debut novel “The Nickel Boys” at Scripps College at 7 p.m. on Sept. 17 in the Garrison Theater. 

The novel focuses on the dark history behind a reform school is Florida’s Panhandle. 

Tickets are $30 and will include a copy of “The Nickel Boys.”

One of the core values of the University of La Verne is civic and community engagement, but when it comes to on-campus living, these values are not exactly front-and-center – at least not on the weekends.
