The Student Athlete Advisory Committee held a Welcome Back BBQ on Aug. 28.
The event filled Sneaky Park with roughly 400 students, who enjoyed burgers, snow cones and more, and learned about the University’s sports teams, while connecting with their peers.
“The purpose of the Welcome Back BBQ is to get all of our University of La Verne students excited for the new school year, have new students meet each other, and introduce the sports teams we have on campus,” said Kelly Yeung, president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and senior educational studies major.
The event also featured activity booths run by various campus organizations, including sororities and fraternities. Students were able to approach the booths and ask questions.
“We heard music and saw the tents and we wanted to come and check it out and see what the whole event was about,” said freshman psychology major Jacqueline Martinez, who attended the event. “It shows how lively the school is.”
Students said they enjoyed the BBQ. They felt it was an opportunity to be part of the community and blow off some steam from the first week of school.
Freshman business administration major Tre’veon Horn, said how stressful it can be entering college and not being fully aware of what is to come.
“I’m excited, nervous, anxious, all of that in one,” Horn said.
“This year, because of the awareness of our event last semester, more people were definitely excited for this,” said Madison Smith, Student Athlete Advisory Committee treasurer and junior accounting major.
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee is still fairly new, however, now that more students are out-and-about post pandemic, awareness of its activities and purpose has begun to grow.
