ULV sinks its teeth into Bulldogs

The University of La Verne women’s volleyball team quickly swept its opponents this week in their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches.

The Leopards took care of business Friday night, defeating the University of Redlands 3-0 in front of enthusiastic Leopard fans in the Supertents.

They dominated each game 30-15, 30-18, and 30-21.

Three players recorded double digits in kills: freshman Mandy Sedia had 12, sophomore Amy Kratochvil had 11 and senior Stacey Lupu had 10.

Kratochvil and freshman Courtney Rollins also recorded 11 digs each.

Head coach Don Flora said, “Redlands is a good team, and it was good for us to finish them off in three games.”

The Leopards continued their winning streak Tuesday as they defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in yet another three game sweep.

They conquered the Athenas 30-14, 30-13 and 30-19.

Prior to the match, Flora said, “The match with Claremont is big since it’s for first place and will establish the premiere team in the conference.”

Just as expected, the Leopards executed for the win.

“We executed our systems at the highest level we’ve played all year,” Flora said.

“Adele Jones played her best match of the year, and all 12 players contributed to the win.”

For the match, Lupu led with 15 kills and Jones had eight.

The team had a hitting percentage of .455 for the night.

“It was a great game the best we’ve ever played,” said junior Lisa Mila. “We played like I’ve never seen us play.”

The Leopards are undefeated so far in SCIAC and are currently tied for first place with Occidental.

They will continue to defend their title, facing Pomona-Pitzer at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Pomona. They will also go up against conference rival California Lutheran at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Supertents.

“The next two weeks will tell us where we stand in the national picture,” Flora said.

Earlier in the week, there was a small ceremony unveiling a 2001 Women’s Volleyball National Championship banner.

Three former Leopard volleyball players were present to witness the unveiling.

Flora said the banner will help show respect for the team’s great 2001 season.
