With five first place finishes and one record broken at last Saturday’s Pomona-Pitzer All Comers meet, this seasons track team looks eager to win.
Both the men’s and women’s teams looked strong in their respective events.
The men finished first in the 400-meter relay with a time of 43.79 seconds. Pt. Loma came in second with a time of 44.98 seconds.
Mike McClendon and Marc Tyler both placed first in the men’s 100-meter dash heats.
Tori Bare took first place in the women’s 400 meter with a time of 62.24s.
Head Coach Pat Widolff said this meet showed that the sprinters will do well this season.
The team has been training since Jan. 3 and Widolff hopes to improve the hurdlers and jumpers.
Kirk Leggett, who placed second in the long jump with 20’ 3” and placed sixth in the triple jump, looks as if he may have a shot at being one of the top members of the team if he continues to improve.
Widolff also hopes to improve the throwers, which shouldn’t be a problem with Erika Spencer, who placed first in the women’s javelin event with 104’ 5 1/2”. Diane Haskell followed the lead with a second place of 93’ 4 1/2”.
In the men’s shot put, Will McCain and Dan Fewx placed fifth and sixth.
The team is still hopeful that Kelly Mattson and Sal Lopez will return to participate in the event. According to Widolff, they are the top throwers.
Gilbert Gomez broke his own school record of 10:43 in the 3000 meter steeplechase event with a new time of 10:29.
At the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) meet on March 4 in Claremont, ULV will compete against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Pomona-Pitzer and Occidental.
“These are the best teams,” said Widolff. “It’ll show how we stack up against the others.”
The upcoming meet will be the first SCIAC competition.
