A game-high 22 points for senior guard Fitzgerald Moore was not enough for the University of La Verne men’s basketball team to keep pace with the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen Wednesday night.

The Leos (3-6) dropped their sixth conference game of the year, 82-48, and saw their overall record fall to 6-14.

“We didn’t do one thing correctly,” said Head Coach Terry Boesel.

Leo shooters had trouble finding the basket all evening. They shot a dismal 29 percent for the game from the field, while the Kingsmen shot at 50 percent.

Early in the first half the score was tied 4-4 when the Kingsmen took control of the game. A 12-0 run gave them a 16-4 lead.

With 5:45 left to go in the first half, senior guard Mark Heerema drained a three point field goal to give the Kingsmen a 28-8 lead. Cal Lutheran lead 30-18 at the half.

Turnovers were a problem for both teams. The Leos committed 28, 11 by senior forward Ryan Campuzano, and the Kingsmen had 22 for the night.

“This past week we have had bad practices,” said Boesel “I told the guys all week that you will play like you practice and that’s how we played. Lackadaisical.”

The Leos are optimistic about playing Claremont on Saturday. Claremont is the number one team in the league (8-1), having lost only to the Leos.

“We’ll come out and play much harder at Claremont. Hopefully the guys learned something tonight,” said Boesel.

Saturday’s game begins at 7:30 p.m. at Claremont.
