Should women have the right to choose? Should the government be able to limit a woman’s choice? Can we as humans interfere with the creation of life? These are some of the questions I ask myself when trying to figure out the answer to the abortion question.
Pro-choice or pro-life? It is a question many of us ask, a question that causes debate. Some people already know, but most of us aren’t really sure.
Many people think they know what being pro-life or pro-choice is, but what they are doing is joining a crowd, going with the flow.
I have never stated whether I stood one way or the other because I have never been sure of what is right and I am not going to play follow the leader this time.
This is an issue that should be thought through before a decision is made.
Republican lawmakers think they are right and Democrats think they are right, but who are they to decide?
The Catholic Church does not believe that we should interfere with the creation of human life in any way.
Who is right? Who should we believe? Should we all believe that abortion is wrong or should we allow women the choice of doing what they wish with their bodies?
I believe that women should have the right to choose, but I also feel that a fetus is a form of life from the moment of conception and therefore an abortion would be killing the child.
Isn’t that a contradiction? Isn’t one a pro-life statement and the other a pro-choice statement?
That is where my dilemma comes from. I believe one thing, but then something else will make more sense and I again wonder what is right.
I will hear one argument about a woman who died because of a botched illegal abortion, so it should be legal, but even with it legal, women are dying.
Last month a doctor in New York was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for killing a woman in a botched legal abortion. The judge called the case “depraved, indifferent murder.”
The people who say they are pro-life bother me because they believe that abortions should be illegal and that you should not kill a baby, and yet they go out and shoot a doctor that happens to work at a clinic where abortions take place. If they are trying to save a life, why are they doing it by killing another?
Another argument I have heard for keeping it legal is that unwed single mothers cannot afford to raise children.
But then, we have all been told that abortion should not be used as birth control.
I said before that I believe that women should have the choice, but to use abortion as birth control is being irresponsible.
I had a friend tell me that she was pregnant and that her boyfriend wanted her to get an abortion. He said that he would leave her if she did not have one, but she wanted to keep the baby.
She can barely support herself, yet she is ready to take responsibility for her mistake. Her boyfriend is not.
At first I thought that she was crazy for wanting to keep the baby, but then I thought about what I would do in that situation and I probably would do the same thing.
This is the closest I have come to dealing with abortion on a personal level and it made me realize even more how much difficulty I am having in trying to figure out what is right.
Declaring that you stand on one side of an issue is a difficult decision that should not be taken lightly.
Abortion is an issue that is important to us and will always be debated, but if there is no one who will take a firm stance on any side, what will happen?
I am trying to figure this thing out so I will no longer be confused. For all those who have decided and know where they stand, I commend them because they have made the hardest choice of all.
