It is two years after the millennium and countless years into the "future," but when it comes to choosing performances that represent how much society has evolved, the Academy Awards (celebrating its 74th birthday on March 24) are still stuck in the past (think 1950s past).

Allow me to explain myself before I begin to ramble about some confusing movie jargon that, frankly, only certain people care about as much as I do.

What is an HMO? The answer to this question is clearly explained in the new PG-13-rated drama "John Q." The movie features Oscar nominee Denzel Washington in the character John Q. Archibald, a desperate father whom the health system fails, leaving him nothing more than an extreme decision to save his son's life.
