I was outraged when I read the article about David Riffle being convicted of violating Jamie Bigornia's civil rights ["Verdict reached in Bigornia case," Feb. 7].

Riding the momentum of the Caltech three game sweep, using aggressive hitting and solid pitching, the University of La Verne baseball team took two of three games from the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens, but fell to the Chapman Panthers, losing 16-1, Tuesday night.

Clawing and roaring their way back to contention, the University of La Verne Leopards streaked past Caltech in three straight games to complete a series sweep of the Beavers.

Sophomore David Riffle was convicted and sophomore Eric Britton was acquitted yesterday at 2:30 p.m. on two misdemeanor counts stemming from a 1996 attack on senior Jamie Bigornia.

“We are joined together tonight in order to make a statement that we as faculty, staff and students and members of the La Verne community will not tolerate violence against anyone for any reason. We, at La Verne, want to let others know that we care about each other as members of the human race and that we appreciate the difference that diversity makes in a community and on campus.”

After University administrators have denied action in the recent homosexual harassment incident, questions have been raised about a clause in the “Disciplinary Process at the University of La Verne” handbook.
