I just wanted to compliment Shiva Rahimi on her insightful opinion piece ["Mission provides invaluable education," Sept. 25] in the Campus Times regarding the Mission Statement.
As a reflection of the University of La Verne community, the importance of service is emphasized repeatedly. The underlying message of serving, as declared within the University's Mission Statement, expresses that:
In a nation so diverse, not only in cultures, but also in age, social class and sexual orientation, the skills to deal with other people's differences are vital. A university setting should be ideal to foster not only academics, but also knowledge about each other.
Imagine walking into the Student Center and having to look into the face of a person who had assaulted you, had beaten you, who didn’t understand you, didn’t know you and didn’t want to know you.
