By the time Whittier back-up quarterback Michael Guth came into Saturday’s football romp, the damage had already been done. The Leopards were up 52-7 and there was no sign of the Leos tiring.

There is the story of the fighter who wants to go one more time with the champ. Sometimes he is fortunate enough to win and end his career in a blaze of glory. On the other hand, the fighter gets humiliated, never posing a threat to the champ, getting beat to a pulp. Unfortunately, that last fight is all most people remember even if the fighter had a great career.

By the end of the first quarter of play, the University of La Verne Leopard football team found itself in a spot. Chapman University built a 21-0 lead only to let it slip away in the fourth quarter to see ULV win, 35-34.

A baptism by fire is what Football Coach Don Morel is hoping tomorrow’s first football game of the season will not be. But going against the large defensive line of Chapman University may be what the University of La Verne needs to have another winning season.

There will never be another football season like this year’s. The fighting Leos may take it all the way to the playoffs again, but missing from the cast will be the players that Rex Huigens molded in his first year as head coach.

With the regular season over, the Leopard football team has turned its attention to Minnesota, but the achievements of La Verne before the championships are, in a word, memorable.
