Often, when tragedy strikes, the first reaction is to do something about it. And, if we cannot do that, we want to prevent it from repeating. When we follow this instinct – the proverbial knee-jerk reaction – the results can be as bad as the cause. Politicians' knee-jerk grandstanding can often be worse, in more subtle ways.
