Say goodbye to the hope of doubling gas mileage on SUV's in the near future. Last week, the Senate ignorantly passed a bill allowing auto makers to keep the gas mileage on SUV's about the same as it has been.

This week is Rideshare Week, an event designed to encourage faculty and staff members to share a ride to school and by doing so, promote clean air.

Through the idea of John Lentz, director of campus safety and transportation, University of La Verne students, faculty and staff will ride in style in rental vans.

To the surprise of most people, the Route 30 corridor is to be completed by the year 2002. For some, this has no bearing because they do not know that the 30 Freeway, which begins in La Verne where Interstate 210 (I-210) ends and Foothill Boulevard begins, will barrel through La Verne, Claremont, Upland and connect to the I-15 in Rancho Cucamonga.

It is 5 p.m. on a Friday. You are driving toward Claremont on Foothill to meet some friends for dinner. At that time, you realize you should have thought twice about taking Foothill Boulevard. Now you are stuck in major traffic and what should have been a 10 minute ride is now 25 minutes.

Bicycling, walking, carpooling and vanpooling are all ways for University of La Verne's employees and students to participate in the Rideshare Program.
